FREDDIE

Freddie’s Story

Freddy is one of our longest residents! He has been with us for five years!!!

Don’t let that hurt your heart! We are foster based, with the majority of the dogs, living here with Sarah and I so we can provide daily training. We consider all of the dogs in the rescue “our dogs”, they are treated as our own pack, until a better life filled with adventure shows up!

Freddy was adopted from the shelter 5 years ago. His adopter got my number and called me a week after adopting him, and asked me for help. I thought we were discussing training options. At the end of the phone call she said, “that’s great that you can train dogs, but I don’t want a trainer, I was told you are a rescue? I need you to take this dog, I can’t keep him.”

I was fuming. I had no room for another big dog, and I was offended that this woman just thought I was someone she could dump her family on, because she didn’t want the responsibility anymore. She told me her 5 year old son was too rambunctious and she shouldn’t have gotten Freddy.

My attitude during our conversation greatly shifted when I found out what she expected me to do… before the call ended I told her to make a post and I would network him. I don’t remember what she said, but she was just as annoyed with me as I was with her.

The next day I had a terrible feeling. I called her right away to see if she had made a post for freddy so I could network it(I knew she hadn’t)- she very casually told me, “no one would help me so I took him back to the shelter.”

I was gutted, and pissed. He didn’t deserve that, and I was involved. I raced down to the shelter and fished him out.

Freddy is kind, playful, adorable, and has the best mushy muzzle that you can sink your face into for a kiss! Freddy does well with other dogs, no cats!

His cat reactivity has been the most challenging. Freddy is a perfectly well rounded dog, however, up until this last year, anytime he saw a cat on a walk, he would lunge and bark like crazy. Sarah and I have worked with him diligently to teach him better patterns.

Freddy would love an owner that wants to go on cool adventures, and put in the time in, to work with us, so we can teach his new owner learn leash skills, so his cat reactivity doesn’t sneak back up!
