COWBOY

Cowboy’s Story

Cowboy came to us all the way from Mississippi. I ventured out east to work with one of our colleagues(Sky), and on our way home from delivering a family of pups to their foster, we happened upon 92 dogs, all chained to various cars, trailers and some in brokedown kennel runs, on a property off the side of the freeway.

I was driving, and didn’t see the dogs or the property, but my 17 year old side kick, Sky did. She alerted me, I slowed down, and both of us exhausted from the most recent rescue mission she said “We have to go back and see if they need help.”

I knew she was right. Sky held me to my own words- “if it crosses your path it’s yours to do.”

The owners of the property were open to our help. They were a rescue that had been overwhelmed with the county dumping dogs on them, and they weren’t willing to euthanize for space. I could get behind that.

Cowboy was the first dog we saw as we pulled onto the property. He was chained to a trailer, and it was obvious his permanent home had been the hole he dug under the trailer.

Out of 92 dogs, the owner of the property said Cowboy would probably be the only dog we wouldn’t be able to take, due to him being human aggressive.

Two weeks later when we came back with Second Chances NY Rescue and a crew of 15 people to remove all the dogs, we figured out a way to make it work.

Once I got cowboy off the chain he had lived on for 7 years, I had a different dog in front of me. We made the trek back to AZ, and Cowboy is EASILY the happiest dog I have ever met!

Every day he wakes up, bouncing and prancing like “omg, it’s you! I can’t believe I get to see you again!!!”

Cowboy would do best with someone that enjoys being active! He LOVES to run next to us on the bike, the skateboard, and is an allstar at the slatmill! I would say he’s making up for lost time!

He would do best with female dogs his size, but no cats. Cowboy is shy, sweet, and has a very forgiving heart.
